Online learning video

Online learning video is a new venture for us, so when the New York and London-based writing school The Novelry called, we were very much interested and intrigued at what could be achieved.

Shooting first in a private house with a fire-side chat feel, we filmed a series of tutorials to give the viewer an insight into what is required to write your first novel. The films varied in length from one minute up to five, and Booker Prize-listed author Louise Dean made the shoot of around fifty short films an incredible experience.

A second shoot of online learning video tutorials was then planned at the amazing JJ Media studios in Shoreditch, London, whose staff were incredibly helpful and welcoming. This shoot was a very different affair from the first. Working with twelve presenters over three days, shot as single, pairs and group tutorials, was more complex to arrange. We put a great deal of time into the pre-production phase to catalogue and programme the order of the shoots to maximise the time available, which paid dividends during the shoot. Preparation is key!

Once again, we found that all twelve presenters were so proficient in their delivery that there were few, if any, retakes required, and the group clearly loved speaking about their topics. The creative talent of make-up artist Tara Hickman and photographer Sharron Gibson really helped to make this an enjoyable shoot. We even found that Murphy, the miniature schnauzer who was the absolute star of the show, hit all his marks first time, every time!

Covering every aspect of writing a novel, this online learning video project was incredibly informative. Whatever the genre – crime,  thriller, romance or science fiction – there was advice for the would-be author. Advice on how to pitch your novel and present it to literary agents… every step of the process was covered.

We are now looking forward to the next shoot at the same venue to help The Novelry deliver their courses to writers across the globe and certainly produce some amazing new literature.
